The Rebecca Ibel Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Heimir Björgúlfsson.
His work responds to the cultural and social contrasts he experienced living and working as an artist in markedly different cultures, from relatively rural Iceland to the old world sophistication of Amsterdam, to hip and urban Los Angeles. Drawing on various artistic influences, as well as his singular cultural experiences, Björgúlfsson creates works that defy easy categorization.

In his works on paper Björgúlfsson harmoniously employs diverse media, including paint, pencil, marker and photographs in his collages. The large-scale paintings similarly ‘collage’ various images, (though are all painted) with a kaleidoscope perspective. As the artist has had a longstanding fascination with birds, it is no wonder that they are omnipresent in his work. Curious cacti and trees, landscapes and graffiti are present, reflecting the artist’s interest in the mundane objects that permeate his surroundings. Finding beauty in unusual places and presenting these objects in a new context makes Björgúlfsson’s work provocative and alluring. His cross-cultural dialogue and his multi-faceted aesthetics, Björgúlfsson can truly be described as an artist for the 21st Century.

Originally from Reykjavík, Iceland, Björgúlfsson lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from the Sandberg Institute in 2003 and his BFA at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2001 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His work has gained considerable attention within the United State and internationally, with recent exhibitions in Zurich, Los Angles, and Iceland.
